The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ® (LLS) is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services. LLS has been funding research for more than 60 years and has a remarkable record of supporting investigations that lead to improved diagnostics and more effective therapies.
Today, LLS funds more blood cancer research than any other voluntary health agency in the U.S. or Canada. Almost half of the new cancer drugs approved in the U.S. since 200 (21/50) were approved to treat one or more blood cancers, and LLS helped advance most of them. The research that LLS is funding has contributed to significant advances for blood cancer patients. Just a few of those are listed below:
- The five-year survival rate for patients with leukemia has nearly quadrupled in the last 50 years, with some pediatric leukemia survival rates being nearly 91%.
- The five-year survival rate for patients with Hodgkin lymphoma has more than doubled since 1960.
- Innovations in cancer treatment over the years have included radiation and chemotherapy, stem cell transplantation and new targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without harming normal ones.
Headquartered in White Plains, NY, LLS has chapters throughout the United States and Canada. To learn more, visit www.LLS.org or contact the Information Resource Center at (800) 955-4572, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.
ABOUT TEAM IN TRAINING
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training (TNT), has grown to be the world’s largest and most successful endurance sports training program for charity. Since its inception in 1988, TNT has prepared more than 540,000 people to achieve their dream of completing a marathon, half marathon, triathlon, 100-mile (century) bicycle ride or hike adventure and raised a remarkable $1.2 billion to support blood cancer research.
Participants raise funds to help find cures for blood cancers. In exchange, they receive personalized coaching, training clinics and the support and camaraderie of a team. Participants can choose from more than 60 accredited events in the U.S. and abroad and LLS provides airfare and accommodations to their event destinations. A key element of the TNT experience is training in honor of a local blood cancer survivor whose courage provides motivation and inspiration.
